Burning Passions

There are several countries in the world that ban the burning of their flag.  I believe France and Germany are among them. It’s not just the extreme positions of North Korea or China.

I can certainly understand the sentiment behind Donald Trumps executive order banning flag-burning. I hate seeing spoiled brats — typically leftists of one strain or another — whining about what a terrible country they live in while desecrating the symbol of one of histories great experiments in individual freedom.

That said, I don’t support Trumps position on the issue but, contrary  to the nonsense screeched by partisans, I don’t think he’s a “fascist” for wishing to rekindle more traditional views about allegiances to one’s national home.

The Bill of Rights trumps (no pun intended) any fleeting sentiments a president may have no matter how just they may appear,  but there’s nothing in the constitution that says we must let in hordes of criminals and random wanderers (for example). There’s also nothing that mandates common respect for our nation’s symbols. Buying a flag (probably made in China) and burning it is one thing, defacing a public monument quite another.

Citizens should be permitted to express stupid feelings and ideals but that doesn’t make them any less stupid.
